CONFERENCE THEME
Awake and Active: Equity, Empowerment, and Civility in Challenging Times
The Tennessee chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) is issuing a call for proposals for the chapter’s 2nd annual conference, to be held July 15, 2022, on the campus of Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee. We invite traditional presentations, panel discussions, and poster presentations on research, scholarly, classroom, or community activity related to our conference theme:
Keynote Speaker: James Gambrell
James Gambrell is Associate Professor of TESOL/Bilingual Education in the Inclusive Education Department at Kennesaw State University. His research focuses on intersections of race and language in bilingual education including language policy and planning, bilingual teacher preparation pathways, and classroom practices that engage language minoritized students, families, and communities.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE THEME
Members of Tennessee NAME believe that equity and diversity make our state, region, and nation stronger; thus, our focus for this conference is on working for equity, empowerment, and civility in challenging times—in our schools, our neighborhoods, and our workplaces. We invite you to help us advance this goal through these means:
Awake and Active—Awareness of the barriers, obstacles, inequities, and injustices that permeate society is a first step toward change, but awareness alone will not lead to a more equitable and just society. Seeking information and acting on that awareness also are essential.
Equity—Promoting multicultural equity is strengthened by examining socio-political environments that help educators identify barriers and challenges that students and communities face. A critical understanding of current economic, environmental, and social policies is necessary to advance equity in society at large as well as to apply culturally responsive strategies in education.
Empowerment—Multicultural education and empowerment depend on each other to further the goals of social change. Empowering students of diverse racial, ethnic, and gender groups involves creating a transformational culture where students are equipped with strategies for examining their own social system in schools, communities, and larger societies to advance social and educational justice.
Civility—Engaging in discourse to understand the deeper complexities of social equity and questioning the sociopolitical structures in society are necessary components of democratic responsibilities. Listening to others and engaging with integrity, understanding human rights, and sharing lived experiences are integral for eliminating racism and social injustices in society.
The Tennessee chapter of NAME invites educators, researchers, graduate students, healthcare providers, business and industry representatives, policymakers, community members, local activists, and anyone else interested in working to build more equitable and diverse communities to be a part of this 2nd annual Tennessee NAME conference. We hope to build on the many ideas and relationships developed in our inaugural 2019 conference attended by more than 150 people from several states.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
We are now accepting proposals for 50-minute traditional, panel, or poster sessions. Deadline for submitting proposals is 11:59 p.m. CST on April 30, 2022. Notice of acceptance or rejection will be sent no later than May 21, 2022. Conference registration opens May 6. The conference rate for professionals is $70 and $50 for students. If accepted for conference registration, all presenters must register and pay in full in order to be included in the conference. Submissions are limited to two proposals per person. Information required for a proposal is outlined below. Separate files cannot be uploaded, but you may copy and paste from a word processor into the form. Be certain to complete each field, noting the word limitations.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
Each presentation session will be 50 minutes. Traditional paper presentation sessions will be paired, with each presenter allotted 20 minutes and the remaining 10 minutes saved for questions from the audience. Panels must include at least three but no more than five presenters, with 35 minutes for panel discussion and 15 minutes for questions. Posters will be displayed in a gallery for one 50-minute session, and poster authors must be present for discussion. Poster presentations are limited to two authors per poster.
Information required for proposals:
Name of lead presenter: name, title, affiliation, email, bio
Names of co-presenters: names, titles, affiliations, emails, bios
Title of traditional, panel, or poster presentation: (15 words max).
Focus of presentation: choose one—a) research in progress; b) research completed; c) classroom activity; d) community activity.
Summary of presentation and significance of content: (150 words max). Provide a summary of your presentation and include a rationale based on current research, knowledge, and/or practice. Demonstrate timeliness.
Intended outcomes of presentation: (150 words max). Explain explicitly what you want your audience to learn from your presentation.
Connection to conference theme: (150 words max). Explain how your proposal content and/or outcomes connect to one or more elements of the conference theme.
Delivery: (100 words max). Explain how the audience will be engaged, particularly participant/presenter interactions, and what materials will be used (such as handouts, slide presentations), as well as relevance or innovativeness of materials. Explain how the time allotted will be used in the presentation (i.e., how much time for presenter, video, discussion, questions).
